mr. magorium is the poor man's willy wonka

You to do the math. Eccentric, mysterious entrepreneur who's target demographic is persons 12 and under. Takes you on a wild journey where things in his "emporium" *cough*factory don't behave as they should. Magic ensues. Questionable drug references. Jeez, it doesn't take a genius to smell a rip off a mile away. The only thing Mr. Magorium needs in his shop are height challenged staff with orange complexions to complete this cinema-facsimile.

It is rated G for Adult Situations, Sexual Content, Adult Language and Graphic Violence.

In other news, Ashley and I saw Lars and the Real Girl a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. It was a charming, warm, and fun breath of fresh air to an otherwise stagnant comedy genre.

What good movies have you seen lately?

Do you read Eric D. Snider's movie reviews? If not you should...his blog/podcasts are pretty friggin great too.

I'm excited to see Lars and the Real Girl but am even more excited to see No Country for Old Men (Coen bros). I did see American Gangster. Meh. Not too bad but didnt blow me away.

Poor Man's??? More like Homeless Man's! That movie looks TERRIBLE!!

It's also good to Sex Dolls finally getting play in a major motion picture. Bravo Bianca.

Come on people let's get sweaty! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0839980/trailers-screenplay-E35484-314

A Crude Awakening, a documentary about the oil industry, was good. Sometimes even films about causes I agree with get annoyingly preachy (yes you Al Gore), but this one really held my attention without going overboard.

Re: semi-pro. man, i've really soured on will ferrell. like other snl alum, if their not bridled, it's trouble. like cotton candy... too sweet, too much.

i've really wanted to like his last movies, but they were bad. he's much better when you just get dabbles of him.

i've learned my lesson from talledega nights and that ice skating movie... can't even remember the name.

i love him in sketch comedy - that was his real genius.

the big screen has also been less friendly to unbridled performances of adam sandler (little nicky), mike myers (cat & the hat, austin powers) et al.

Into the Wild. yes. go. now.

It is the first non-documentary I've seen in ages and the hype is for real. also I am patiently waiting to see The new Coen brothers this weekend, for Javier Bardem in a bowlcut alone.

Willy Wonka is one of my favorite movies of all time. The remake was a huge disappointment. And I haven't seen Mr. Magorium, but even in the trailers you can tell that they are trying to be as good as the original willy wonka. But there's no way.

I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do with a lifetime supply of chocolate.

we saw into the wild. i thought it was good... but not earth shattering good.

we also saw the darjeeling limited and i thought it was fantastic. i'm hardly a wes anderson critic, i think he's clearly in a league of his own - so everything he touches turns to gold.

yah, but Mr. Magorium has Jason Bateman, who I've had a crush on since "The Hogan Family."

Yes - you nailed it!! A complete ripoff of Willy Wonka. All the reviews in the major papers allude to some similarity but they all fail to note how lame Magorium is compared with Wonka. Simply by noting a similarity, movie reviewers unitentionally help Magorium because Willy Wonka was so wonderful. And Hoffman is unwatchable in this movie, with his contrived lisp and ridiculous hair -- an exceedingly poor stab at Gene Wilder immortality.
